London – Royal Opera, Garsington & Glyndebourne Festivals – July 4–16, 2024





Join us in the United Kingdom in 2024 as we experience old favorites and a new opera company. First, we travel to Sussex to visit the Glyndebourne Opera Festival. There, we will see Giulio Cesare, Die Zauberflöte,  and The Merry Widow. We will also take a day trip down to Lewes Castle and Ann of Cleves’ House all while staying in the crisp, deluxe 5-STAR Grand Hotel Eastbourne.

After our three days in Eastbourne, Sussex, we travel to London, where we will stay at the 5-STAR Hotel May Fair. During our stay in London, we will see operas at: The Royal Opera House-Covent Garden, including Cosi Fan TutteTosca, and Madama Butterfly; travel to The Garsington Festival to see Un Giorno di Regno and Mozart’s Mitridate, Le Nozze di Figaro. While in London, we will have tours of Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Shakespeare’s Old Globe, and Tate Museums. We will also enjoy a dinner at Sarastro’s Restaurant, which boasts opera-singing waiters and offer the option of going to see a West End Musical (TBD).

ITINERARY

Thursday, July 4th

Upon arrival to London Heathrow Airport, we meet our host and tour director and board our coach to to the 5-Star Grand Hotel Eastbourne. After getting settled in, we will meet at the hotel’s Garden Room Restaurant for our Welcome Dinner.

Friday, July 5th

After breakfast at the Grand, we board our coach to visit the iconic Brighton Royal Pavillion on the seaside. In the evening, we meet at the Grand Lobby again and depart for the Glyndebourne Opera Festival to attend Handel’s Giulio Cesare. Dinner with wine will be at Mildmay Restaurant during the long interval between acts.

Saturday, July 6th

After breakfast, the day is ours to spend at our leisure OR to go on a day excursion to Lewes to see the Lewes Castle, the 1000-year-old castle built by William di Warenne, son-in-law of William the conqueror, along with Barbican House containing the fascinating Museum of Sussex Archaeology, and finally the Anne of Cleves House. In the evening, we once again head to the Glyndebourne Festival, this time to attend Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte.

Sunday, July 7th

Free day to enjoy Eastbourne and it’s seaside. In the afternoon, we board our coach and travel to the Glyndebourne Festival for the final time to attend Franz Lehar’s The Merry Widow. During the long interval between the acts, we will have our Farewell Glyndebourne Dinner at the festival’s Middle & Over Wallop Restaurant.

Monday, July 8th

After breakfast at the Grand, we board our coach for our drive to our 5-Star Deluxe Hotel May Fair in London. After checking in, the rest of the day is at leisure. In the evening, we will meet in the May Fair Restaurant for our London Welcome Dinner.

Tuesday, July 9th

After Breakfast at the May Fair, we meet our guide at the lobby and head to our tours of Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey. The evening is free to explore London on our own OR perhaps attend a Piano Recital at Wigmore Hall (Andreas Haefliger- pianist performing works of Beethoven, Schubert & Berg)

Wednesday, July 10th

The day is to spend at leisure after breakfast OR the optional Tate Museums & Old Globe Tour. After Breakfast, we meet our London Guide and board our coach and drive to the Tate Museum to see the different art collections from 1500 to today, and then board the Tate Boat for a short cruise on the River Thames to the Tate Modern Museum to see their modern art collection. Then, we drive to the Swan Restaurant for our 3-course luncheon. Lunch will be followed by a private guided tour of Shakespeare’s Old Globe Theatre. In the evening, we meet at the hotel lobby & board our coach to the drive to the Royal Opera- Covent Garden to attend Mozart’s Cosí Fan Tutte.

Thursday, July 11th

After buffet breakfast at the May Fair, we meet our guide for our sightseeing excursions of the day. Our first stop is the Tower of London to see the prisons housing famous patriots and Rpual Monarchs, then we see the Crown Jewels. Our next stop is the St. Paul’s Cathedral, one of London’s architectural masterpieces, before returning to the hotel. In the evening, we board our coach for the drive to the Royal Opera House to attend Puccini’s Tosca.

Friday, July 12th

After Breakfast, the rest of the morning is free to explore the city or do some shopping. In the afternoon, we meet at the May Fair lobby and board our coach for the drive to the Garrsington Opera Festival to attend Verdi’s Un Giorno di Regno. Dinner will be served at the lovely Marquis Boundary restaurant during the interval.

Saturday, July 13th

The morning is either free to explore at leisure, or to join our excursion in the morning to the Churchill War Rooms. The evening is free to explore London at night or attend a West End show (TBD)

Sunday, July 14th

Free morning after breakfast. In the afternoon, we meet in the May Fair lobby and board our coach for the drive to the Garsington Opera Festival to attend Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. We will enjoy the traditional Garsington Picnic Dinner on the lovely grounds over-looking the cricket grounds or Deer Park during the interval between the acts.

Monday, July 15th

After breakfast, the morning is once again free to explore the city, shop, or pre-pack for tomorrow’s return flights. In the evening, we meet at the May Fair lobby and head to Sarastro’s Restaurant for our Farewell London Pre-Opera Dinner. After dinner, we stroll to the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden to attend our Final Performance, Puccini’s Madama Buttterfly.

Tuesday, July 16th

Transfers to London Heathrow Airport can be arranged.
